Autism is a developmental disability that affects the social and communication skills of children. This condition usually shows up in children before the age of 3. It is prevalent, with 1 in 100 children currently being affected. The need for services and support for these children and their families is great and there are, fortunately, many autism support groups. These groups are international, national and local.

Local resources to help you find support in your community can include local schools and the state department of health. There is generally an organization within the state that focuses on developmental disabilities and early intervention. This is a great place to start to find out about what is available right there in your hometown.

Medical personnel, particularly pediatricians and others who specialize in children’s care should also be able to provide resources to locate autism support groups. Talk to your family doctor as a start, and request any information they have on autism services and support.

Here are some of the more well-known national groups that offer education about autism and support for children who have been diagnosed and their families:

1. The Autism Society – This grassroots organization exists to improve the lives of everyone affected by autism. They strive to increase public awareness, advocate for services for people with diagnosis and provide reliable information about the condition. Another part of their mission is providing direct support to families and individuals. They have chapters in most states and can offer information on the most local of support groups and other services.

2. National Autism Association – The mission of this organization is to provide help addressing the most urgent needs of the autism population. They provide advocacy support on national and local levels and also have chapters in most states. They provide resources for a safety toolkit that addresses autism and wandering.

3. Autism Speaks – This organization is the nation’s largest science and advocacy group for autism. It is dedicated to funding research and increasing awareness. They provide family services, hold fundraising and awareness events all over the country and offer online communities and shopping for autism-related services and items.

4. US Autism and Asperger Association – This national non-profit association focuses on securing support and opportunities for individuals affected by autism. They strive to provide concise, useful and accurate education and information about autism and Asperger’s syndrome. They also provide individual support through local organization, including autism support groups.
