While acne can crop up anywhere on the face and even on the back and chest; acne on the chin is unique due to its increased prevalence amongst women as compared to men.

Acne on the chin and jaw line is usually found more amongst adults and can be quite painful and troublesome, due to lack of much fat or connective tissue in this area, and the fact that the jaw and chin bone lie just underneath.

What are the causes of acne on the chin?

The usual causes are listed below:

  • Hormonal issues like frequently fluctuating or changing levels
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Use of cosmetics that may be leading to allergy
  • Stress
  • Oily skin
  • Drinking inadequate amounts of water

What are the different types of acne on the chin?

1) Cystic Chin Acne

This is an incredibly painful condition, and one that needs extreme care. Any attempt at squeezing or pinching this painfully inflamed acne can lead to severe complications like a cellulitis and may even require surgical intervention.

2) Hormonal Chin Acne

As the name suggests, this type of acne is due to hormonal fluctuations and is usually seen during puberty, menses, pregnancy or even during menopause. Another important cause of hormonal acne on chin is when women tend to stop the use of birth control pills.

Easy Methods to Get Rid Of Chin Acne

  • Wash your face twice a day,  as this is the best way to get rid of the dust, grime and make-up; all of which can clog your pores and aggravate your acne
  • Make sure you wash the face with warm water and a mild cleanser and remember to be soft and gentle on your skin. Over vigorous scrubbing while washing your face, is going to do more harm than good; so stay clear of it.
  • Drink at least 7-8 glasses of water each day to ensure that your system remains clean and all the unwanted toxins and wastes are flushed out of the body through urine and sweat.
  • Use 2 spoons of baking powder in a cup of warm water. This mixture can be applied to the acne lesions using a cotton ball. This will keep your skin soft, help to open up the pores and get rid of the acne.
  • A paste of red sandalwood powder and rosewater can be applied on to the acne to get wonderful results. But ensure that you repeat this twice a day and leave it on to dry for at least an hour before you wash it off with warm water. You can use this paste over the entire face, as it can help to soften your skin and bring a glow to your complexion as well.
  • Watch out for cosmetics and moisturizers that contain any trace of mineral oil in them. Mineral oil can not only aggravate the oiliness of the skin but also worsen the acne.
