Eczema in babies is quite a common problem and often is observed in newborns soon after birth. Eczema in babies is described in medical terms as infantile eczema. The commonest kind of eczema in babies that almost all of us are aware of is the ubiquitous nappy rash. Whilst all cases of nappy rashes are not eczema, and just denote an inflammation of the skin (dermatitis); yet most of the cases of eczema in babies can progress from a nappy rash.

Causes

  • Allergy
  • Genetic predisposition to allergic problems or history of allergic troubles running in the family
  • Excessive dryness of the skin due to use of strong soaps to clean the skin
  • Inflammation of the skin due to friction with nappies or due to moisture from wet nappies

Symptoms

  • Eczema in babies can be extremely itchy and irritating leading to formation of rashes
  • Redness and dryness of skin can also be observed.
  • Fissuring of skin with cracks ad scurf may develop on the affected areas
  • Sometimes red and inflamed eruptions form on affected area
  • Blisters with collection of pus within are also a common feature.
  • Oozing of seropurulent matter may be observed either from the fissures or from the ruptured blisters.
  • If there is secondary infection of the eruptions or fissures, there could be fever, swelling and lymph node enlargements

Management of Eczema in Babies

  • First of all get the diagnosis confirmed by a dermatologist, because many a times the apparent eczema may be just turn out to be a simple dermatitis
  • If there is a family history of allergy, then inform that to your doctor, and he will treat the baby accordingly
  • Maintain adequate hygiene, especially of the nappy area. Take care to ensure that the skin is always kept clean, dry and receives adequate exposure to air
  • Buy only nappies that are extremely safe and made of non-allergic material
  • Use anti-fungal medicated powder to dust the skin after bathing the baby or after changing a soiled nappy and cleaning the area
  • Avoid all strong soaps, shampoos and other cosmetics that can irritate the baby’s tender skin
  • Baby soaps made of glycerine or sorbolene are the best bet
  • Make sure that the baby’s bath water is not chlorinated
  • Avoid using clothes made of irritant material like wool or flannel for babies. Cotton is the best choice for babies, especially if they have such an allergic disposition
  • Do not pack on extra clothes on your baby. Dress him or her according to the weather and ensure that the baby’s kin is well ventilated

Treatment of eczema in babies

  • Creams and ointments with steroids are usually prescribed to be applied on the affected area
  • Antibiotics may be needed to treat secondary infections
  • Anti-histamines may be required to control itching, irritation of skin.
  • Mild sedatives to help the baby sleep calmly
